The Roger Hollander Chinese Minority Collection

The Revised Primary Collection

Roger Hollander loved to collect…and he was blessed with the financial means to pursue whatever interested him. He applied his brilliant mind, keen intuition, and deep pockets, not to mention the luck of fabulous timing, to become one of the most celebrated collectors of this century. And what he collected best were friends!

A visit to Roger’s Irma Lake Lodge in Cody, Wyoming, was always an extraordinary adventure. His property was the original ranch of Buffalo Bill Cody dating back more than 100 years. Trout filled Irma Lake was named after one of Buffalo Bill’s daughters. He lived at the end of a 5 mile dirt road with wilderness in every direction. Yellowstone National Park was a stone’s throw away and the snow-clad Rocky Mountains, America’s highest, presented themselves in all their grandeur straight out his windows.

Each room had surprises. In one, you would encounter Roger’s Mid Century Furniture Collection, in another, his Cowboy Furniture. He had drawers brimming full of significant 20th Century photography; Jain tantric paintings of the 16th Century decorated his walls. Roger’s wine cellar featured hundreds of the very finest vintages and he was always happy to pop a cork of the best for a visitor. Down the hall was his 11,000-volume library and thousands of musical recordings. He loved to cook and it was whispered he spent a million dollars on upgrading the kitchen alone.

To the back of the kitchen was Roger’s holy of holies, his temperature controlled textile treasure room. There is where he kept his collections of Indian Trade Cloth, Indian Mainland, Indonesian, SE Asian Mainland, Tibetan, Turkish, Coptic, early Han, American Indian, and very importantly, his collection of Chinese Minority Costumes, Textiles, and Silver Jewelry.

Roger collected Chinese Minority from the years 2000-2007. He attracted some of the finest pieces in the world market by paying the most money for them. He acquired from the top dealers in China and in the West. Roger was very aware of what it meant to be at the right place at the right time for collecting, as that had been the key to his success forming his famed Indian Trade Cloth Collection. Timing, knowledge, and a willingness to make the financial commitment were again the keys to his success!

Scholars came from around the world to study his textiles and it was his hope that the Irma Lake Lodge, with its many bedrooms and research library, would become a learning center. He hoped for symposia that would integrate the relationships between the indigenous cultures of India, China, S. E. Asia, and Indonesia, who were enriched by migrations, trade, religious ideas, technology, especially viewed through the lens of textiles iconography and woven structures. It was his plan to offer resident scholarships for academics and artists to live, work, and write in some of the cabins that dotted the highlands of his property. He had a fabulous vision, a dream of a genius.

Alas, that was not to be owing to a tragic car accident during a “white out” snowstorm that almost took Roger’s life. After that, it would be no longer possible for Roger to live alone in that grand house and it was necessarily sold.

So too, the Roger Hollander Collection of Indian Trade Cloth was acquired by the Asian Civilization Museum of Singapore, transforming their collection into the finest in the world. However, Roger and the Hollander family had a special affection for his Chinese Minority Collection and they decided to keep it, until now.

For the last eight weeks, I have hosted the RH Collection on our site divided into two parts, the Primary and Secondary Collections. These were listed in the order in which Roger acquired the pieces, which made it difficult to track his collection by ethnicity. I now am reposting the Primary Collection alone, no distractions from the Secondary, “All Killer, No Filler!” That said, persons interested in the RH Secondary Collection, handsome in its own right, are welcome to inquire after it.

You will note that the textiles have been sorted by culture, each with their own “image button” to access a particular minority group. Some ethnicities like the Miao have multiple sub-groups, which have been sorted by the provincial county from which they arise within the column of entries under the header of Miao. This I hope will be of great benefit for researchers of cultural geography and costume design. Captions may be found immediately beside the textile, making it much easier to connect the images with the descriptions.
